Do you find yourself sighing and yawning often? This could be a sign that you are not breathing right. On average we breathe over 22,000 times a day! Without oxygen the body is in a state of disease and breakdown. Imbalances in the body that can affect your breathing are an elevated hip, head forward position, thoracic rotation and flexion (forward lean).
Poor posture can affect many systems in the body including your diaphragm from working properly. You will often hear me say, The body works as a unit! It works multiple systems simultaneously – cardiovascular, breathing, nervous system, structure, movement, power, strength, agility – all the things that are built in.
If your body is out of balance with your head and upper back in a forward position and/or shoulders are out of alignment, you can assume your breathing will be off.
3 Ways to check if your body is out of balance –
-
Check your posture in the mirror or take photos, does one side look differently compared to the other? Is your head in a forward position?
-
Carry out a balance test – stand with your barefoot with your feet together, close your eyes. After a few seconds check to see if you are leaning to the side or back and moving side to side or back and forth – If this happens your body is out of balance.
-
Take a deep breath in, in front of a mirror – Look to see if you lift your shoulders up and forward to make this happen? If yes, then you are out of balance.
